Responsibilities
The City Attorney serves as legal advisor to the full City Council, the City’s commissions, and the City’s professional staff and is responsible for managing all legal matters for the City. The City Attorney is appointed and serves at the pleasure of the City Council.

Malathy “Mala” Subramanian
Clayton’s City Attorney, Ms. Malathy Subramanian, is a partner in the law firm of Best, Best, & Krieger, LLP, and was hired by the City Council in August of 2011. Ms. Subramanian is well versed in municipal law on a variety of key issues including land use and planning, conflicts of interest, the Brown Act, redevelopment law, and many other areas associated with public entities.
