Scam Artists
The Clayton Police Department would like to remind all community members to be alert for scam artists, including individuals who solicit sales at your home or business.
- Door-to-door solicitors must be licensed in Clayton and solicitation permits are issued by the Police Department. The permit shows the solicitor’s name, company, and is signed by the Chief of Police.
- Solicitors are allowed to solicit between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., per Section 9.11.120 of the Clayton Municipal Code.
- Solicitors are prohibited from visiting homes and businesses that have a “No Soliciting” sign posted.
- Any person making door-to-door sales must display their Solicitation Permit. Ask to see the permit if it is not visible or if you have doubts.
Please call the Clayton Police Department at 673-7350 to report suspicious persons, including those who solicit without a Solicitation Permit.
The City of Clayton Police Department offers the following crime prevention programs:
Alarm Registration
In 1990, the Clayton City Council passed Ordinance No. 276 requiring all alarm users to register with the Police Department and pay a one-time registration fee. Call the Clayton Police Department for the current fee amount. An Alarm Registration Form can be found below and can be returned to the Police Department with the appropriate fee. A copy of this Ordinance may be obtained at the time of registration.
Alarms installed prior to the adoption date of the ordinance, are exempt from the registration fee.
In compliance with this Ordinance, the maximum number of allowable false alarms reported shall be no more than three in any thirty day period with a maximum allowable of no more than four in a twelve month period. For every false alarm in excess of three during any thirty-day period or more than four during a year, the user shall pay a false alarm fee of $50.00.

Neighborhood Watch
The Neighborhood Watch Program is intended to prevent crime in our neighborhoods and is under the direction of the Clayton Police Department. Our Neighborhood Watch Program is intended to be presented to Homeowner Associations and local neighborhood groups wanting to reduce crime. Presentations are also available to citizen groups within the City such as church groups, schools groups and other organizations wishing to learn how to improve the security of their homes, how to report a crime, reporting of suspicious activity, and other related subjects.

Vacation House Watch
We’ll keep an eye on your home…
Vacation House Checks are offered to Clayton residents free of charge.
Clayton Police will perform an inspection of your property at least once per week while you are away, paying close attention to the details provided by you on the Vacation House Check Application.

Before you leave…
- Lock all doors and windows. Use dowel rods to secure sliding doors and windows
- Consider leaving an internal light and external lights on to deter criminals. If possible, use timers to schedule them to come on.
- Pull in all trash containers from the curb
- Limit/stop package deliveries that may be placed at your front door.
Friendly Reminder…
Vacation House Check requests must be submitted at least 48 hours prior to departure date and cannot be requested for longer than 60 days.
This service is provided on an as-available basis. It is not for vacant homes, residences for sale or long-term absences.
Vacation House Checks are not to be used as a substitute for security measures. Unless circumstances deem it necessary officers will not go into your backyard. Checks are front perimeter only.
Voluntary Video Surveilance
The STAY S.A.F.E. Program is an opportunity to partner with the Clayton Police Department to help deter crime and catch criminals. This program proactively partners residents and businesses to keep our city safe and solve crime.
The STAY S.A.F.E. program allows residents and business owners to voluntarily register the locations of their video surveillance systems. This crime prevention and investigative tool allows law enforcement to more easily identify the locations of video surveillance systems and enlist the assistance of the community to help obtain video evidence if a crime has occurred in that area.
The Clayton Police Department offers this program as an additional tool to deter criminal activity in our neighborhoods. Many business owners and residents already operate private surveillance systems. As crimes occur in their respective areas, community members are not always aware that their surveillance systems may have captured information that could prove vital in a law enforcement investigation.
The registry and list of registered properties are kept confidential.
The police department will not have automatic access to your camera footage, but this program will allow us to be aware that a camera exists when investigating a crime in or around a particular neighborhood. If a crime occurs in the vicinity or in an adjoining neighborhood, the police may, if necessary, contact participants of the program and request a copy of their footage for evidence or investigative leads.
The program is 100% voluntary and you can choose to opt out of the program at any time.
